US
Marines Flag
Known as the “first to
fight” the US Marine Corps maintains a global presence to respond to threats as
they occur. Established in November 1775 by the Continental Congress, the
Marines have a rich history soaked in honor, tradition and brotherhood.
A unique organization
must be represented by a one-of-a-kind flag. While each of the other military
flags features a white or blue background, the US Marines flag stands out with
a vibrant scarlet backdrop. Some versions are trimmed in gold fringe and are
ideal for use in indoor flag sets and look grand when carried by a color guard
as part of a parade or ceremony.
The focal point of the US
Marines flag is the eagle, globe and anchor emblem in gray and gold. This same
emblem is presented to each new Marine at the end of their final test, the
Crucible. Receiving this historic emblem, which has been part of Marine
tradition since 1868, enters them into a lifelong brotherhood. The symbol
itself consists of three basic elements. The anchor represents the naval
history and power of the Marines. The globe represents a worldwide presence
that the organization maintains and their ability to fight by land. The eagle
represents the nation the organization serves as well as the Marine’s ability
to reach any destination by air.
The US Marines flag has
one unique addition to the traditional emblem. A banner swirls from the eagle’s
beak and bears the phrase, “Semper Fidelis.” As the motto of the Marine Corps
since 1883, the Latin phrase means, “always faithful.” It is a reminder that
becoming a Marine is a lifelong endeavor and that the Corps can always be
trusted in their dedication to the nation, the organization and to each other.
Even after discharge, the
commitment, courage and honor summed up by “Semper Fi” lasts a lifetime.
